Watershed Dance Program 2023

Welcome to Watershed, a transformative dance program designed exclusively for Indigenous youth in Montreal.

Our program recognizes the holistic nature of dance and the arts, providing a space where youth can connect physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Through dance, participants not only express themselves but also reclaim their identity and voice, fostering resilience in the face of adversity. Currently, the representation of Indigenous stories in dance is limited, with non-Indigenous dancers often taking the lead.

Watershed aims to change this narrative by sowing the seeds of interest in young minds, cultivating a passion for dance that may lead to future educational and professional opportunities in the arts. Our inaugural program featured seven dedicated dancers who immersed themselves in a rich curriculum, learning choreography from exceptional teachers. Guided by the wisdom of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, participants explored various dance forms, including pow wow, hip-hop, hoop, and contemporary styles. Beyond dance, the program embraced cultural teachings, allowing youth to design their own regalia and incorporate traditional elements into their performances.

Watershed went beyond the stage, equipping participants with essential skills such as hair and makeup techniques. Collaboratively, the youth worked together to produce a stunning, creative, and professional final show that garnered a remarkable turnout. By providing a platform for Indigenous youth to express themselves, connect with their roots, and develop a passion for dance, Watershed is sowing the seeds of change, fostering a new generation of Indigenous dancers who will tell their own stories. Join us in supporting these young artists as they embrace their cultural heritage through the transformative power of dance.
