INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES PROGRAM:

The objective of the program is to contribute to the revitalization of Indigenous languages, strengthen the cultural identity of Indigenous peoples, and raise awareness of the linguistic situation of Indigenous languages ​​in the urban context.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In general:

Funded by the Canadian Heritage’s Aboriginal Languages Initiative Program and reporting to the Language Program Coordinator, teachers are responsible for conducting the Indigenous language classes that will be offered at Native Montreal. 

More specifically:

  • Teach language courses to adults for 2 hours per week for 11 weeks per semesters (2) (possibly up to 4 semesters per year)

  • Adapt to the needs of the participants in learning the language.

  • Ensure proper follow-up with students in order to support their learning.

  • Create a culturally engaging, fun and creative learning environment

REQUIREMENTS

Training and experience

  • Speak in one of the languages listed above (fluency level depending on level of course)

  • Experience in teaching a language (an asset)

Other

  • Being Indigenous or having great knowledge about the reality of the Indigenous community living in urban areas

  • Adhere to and promote the mission, vision and values of the Native Montreal and the provincial and national friendship centre associations in Canada

  • Pass a criminal record background check

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to communicate and write in an Indigenous language and in English or French

  • Knowledge of the culture associated with the Indigenous language

  • Ease with teaching students of all ages

  • Capacity to work as part of a team and develop a spirit of collaboration

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Teachers will receive an hourly rate of $97.00

  • The course load is 2 hours of class and 30 minutes of planning per week, for 11 weeks per semester 

  • Sessions are in Fall and Winter with possibility for spring and summer semesters 

  • Classes occur once a week in the evening or weekend afternoons

  • Classes will take place at the center or venues around Montreal as needed

  • Priority will be given to Indigenous candidates
