Role Title:              Day Camp Special Educator

Reporting to            Day Camp Coordinator / Manager Prevention and Intervention Services

Native Montreal is a non-profit, multi-service, community-based Indigenous organization encompassing cultural and psychosocial intervention programs dedicated to Indigenous peoples of various age groups. We are proud members of the Friendship Center movement. 

IORAHKOTE Camp is a day camp for Indigenous children. With the learning of Indigenous cultures as a backdrop, we want children to develop a taste for healthy lifestyles and have the opportunity to experience both physical and social successes in building a healthy self-confidence.

JOB PURPOSE: Provide special needs and neurodivergent campers with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Work closely with Native Montreal counselors to develop tools to better succeed collaborating and communicating with campers who require extra care. Collaborate with counselors and day camp coordinators to develop or modify curricula to camper ability levels.

Working closely with day camp coordinators as well as other Native Montreal staff, other professionals and administrators to foster the teaching, enjoyment and learning of campers with additional requisites.

Children enjoy healthy, safe and supportive (nurturing/nourishing) relationships within the entire camp, 

Children experience and understand their emotions; they express and self-manage (control) their emotions in a healthy way and enjoy positive self-esteem 

Children regularly engage in and enjoy a physically active and healthy lifestyle, and are physically healthy

Children experience and are able to explore their cultural identity in a healthy and empowering way that provides effective guidance in dealing with day-to-day life experiences

Parents have access to support and good learning opportunities that address the typical developmental needs of their children, and these are culturally informed

This is accomplished by :

  • Intervene with campers who have special needs;

  • Support the day camp monitors in order to enforce the camp's code of conduct;

  • Develop intervention methods;

  • Keep files up to date and write reports;

  • Meet with children, parents and day camp staff to advise them, inform and provide them with relevant documentation and references;

  • Follow up with parents on their child's progress and ensure a good communication with them;

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children;

  • Participate in team meetings dynamically;

  • Perform, on request, all other tasks related to this function.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The day camp special educator reports to the Camp Coordinator and refers case management to the Manager of Prevention and Intervention services.

Work conditions

  • Seasonal contract from June 1 to August 9, 2024

  • 35-40 hours / week 

  • Salary of $ 19.30 per hour 

  • Work Locations: Angrignon Park, Arthur-Therrien Park, various predetermined locations throughout the city

  • Working hours: Alternation between 8:00am to 4:00pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm,  Monday to Friday

REQUIREMENTS

  • Studying Special Education, Special Care Counselling or equivalent

  • Have experience in day camps

  • Experience providing services to Indigenous children

  • Be 18 years old or older

  • First aid training would be an asset
