Code Club for kids

Native Montreal and Code Club Canada are bringing you Code Club for kids and Code Club for families!

These workshops gradually introduce coding to allow children and their families to build their knowledge incrementally and make their own games and animations. After a few workshops, kids learn how to build their ideas with code.

Who is this for?
Children aged 8 to 12 years old & their families (parents, siblings, cousins, etc.)

Fall session:

  • Code Club for Families (Family members of ‘Code Club for Kids’): Sundays 1-2pm
  • Code Club for Kids: Sundays 2:15-3:15pm
  • Micro:bit Coding for Kids (level 2): Sundays 3:30-4:30pm

Workshop descriptions:

  • Code Club for Families: An introduction to computer programming for ‘Code Club for Kids’ family members, 13 years and older. No prior experience needed except use of a web browser and mouse. Participants will do projects in Scratch, a language designed for teaching coding, similar to the ones that their kids will be learning. ( **Homework help / childminding is available for children of parents attending this
  • Code Club for Kids: Kids 8-12 learn to write computer code by creating fun animations and games using Scratch, a language designed for teaching coding ( We will do the projects from Scratch Module 1.
  • Micro:bit Coding for Kids: Micro:bit ( is a tiny pocket-sized portable computer with a simple graphic display, compass, light/temperature/motion detectors, sound generator, and radio communication. Kids 8-12 will program the Micro:bit using MakeCode to create games and musical instruments.

Our Code Club Instructor Terrence Higgins:
Terry has a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Computer Science from the U. of Waterloo in Ontario. Before retiring, he worked as a C, C++, Java, and web developer and then as a manager for over 30 years at various software companies in Montreal including the National Film Board, Discreet Logic, Oracle, and SAP. He has been working with Native Montreal for over a year first as a volunteer tutor and now as the volunteer running the Code Clubs. He really enjoys introducing kids and adults to programming and is excited to be collaborating with Native Montreal on these Code Clubs!
